For instance, the peony is probably the most popular flower, but they can run about $4 a stem, even in the peak of their growing season. While they are beautiful, they are big budget breakers. A good alternative to the peony is the garden rose. They are just as beautiful, very similar in shape and run about $2.20 a stem. If that is still stretching the budget, the carnation is another alternative. Their fluffy petals look beautiful clumped together and their price tag is an affordable .60 a stem.
